Sander Thoenes Memorial Fund

To Whom It May Concern:

The JFCC has set up a fund in the memory of our former member Sander Thoenes, the Financial Times journalist killed while on reporting duty in East Timor last year.

The nature of the fund will be defined really by the amount of money we manage to raise.

What we do know is the following: funds raised will go towards financing East Timorese students to study journalism at the University of Queensland in Australia. We intend to establish a trust fund in his name that will be administered by the university based on strict criteria established by the JFCC.

We feel helping East Timorese to get some formal journalism training - and ultimately strengthening the quality the East Timor press - is something Sander would have whole-heartedly supported.

We appeal to you to give what you can to the fund and tell all of your friends and contacts about our fund raising efforts.

Donations can be made through the committee of the JFCC at the above address or, preferably, by lodgements directly into the following account set up in Sander's name. Should you wish to have more information, please contact Boris Kester (bkester@alcazar.com) [temporarily]

Sander was the first foreign journalist killed on assignment in Indonesia, or East Timor, since 1991. He was an active member of Jakarta's journalist community and a committee member of the JFCC. He is missed by us all.

Thank you in advance for any donations you can make to this worthwhile fund.
